Crime Scene Examination & Forensic Review

Forensic Insight Consulting provides specialist independent crime scene examination and re-examination services, supporting legal representatives, private investigators, and individuals seeking a detailed forensic review of their case.

Led by highly experienced forensic practitioner Thomas Coyle MNZM, with attendance at over 20,000 crime scenes and examination of more than 250,000 exhibits, we bring extensive operational expertise in the recovery, preservation, and interpretation of forensic evidence.

Our role is to ensure that crime scene evidence has been properly identified, examined, and interpreted—and where necessary, to identify gaps, limitations, or alternative explanations.

Independent Crime Scene Expertise

We provide independent forensic services across a wide range of cases, including criminal, civil, and complex investigations.

Our expertise includes:

  • Crime scene examination and re-examination

  • Forensic evidence recovery and assessment

  • Interpretation of scene dynamics and events

  • Identification of missed or overlooked evidence

  • Review of investigative methodology

This service is particularly valuable where concerns exist about the quality, completeness, or interpretation of the original forensic investigation.

Our Crime Scene Services

We are able to undertake:

  • Full forensic examination of crime scenes or exhibits (where access is available)

  • Independent re-examination of previously examined scenes

  • Detailed forensic review where concerns exist regarding the original investigation

Instructions are accepted from:

  • Criminal defence lawyers

  • Prosecutors

  • Civil litigation lawyers

  • Private investigators

  • Insurance companies

  • Private individuals (including incarcerated persons seeking review)

Forensic Review Without Scene Access

Where physical access to a scene or exhibits is not possible, we conduct a comprehensive forensic review using available case material, including:

  • Scene photographs and video recordings

  • Police and forensic examiner notes

  • Laboratory reports and documentation

From this information, we reconstruct the scene examination and assess the reliability of the forensic findings.

What We Assess

Detailed Forensic Scene Assessment

Our review considers whether:

 Scene Examination Approach

  • The original forensic strategy was appropriate and thorough

  • Key areas of the scene were properly examined

Evidence Recovery & Preservation

  • Evidence was correctly identified, recovered, and preserved

  • Proper forensic techniques were applied

Documentation & Continuity

  • Scene notes, photographs, and records are complete and accurate

  • Continuity of evidence has been maintained

 Omissions & Limitations

  • Any evidence may have been missed or overlooked

  • Limitations in the original investigation are identified

Alternative Interpretations

  • Whether other explanations for the evidence exist

  • Whether conclusions drawn are reasonable and supported

Why Independent Review Matters

Crime scene evidence is often central to a case—but its value depends entirely on how it was handled and interpreted.

An independent forensic review can:

  • Identify critical gaps or missed evidence

  • Challenge incorrect or incomplete conclusions

  • Provide alternative interpretations of events

  • Strengthen or clarify the evidential position

In many cases, what was not examined or recognised can be just as important as what was found.

Court-Ready Forensic Reporting

All findings are presented in clear, structured, and impartial reports suitable for legal proceedings.

We ensure that:

  • Evidence is explained in plain, understandable terms

  • Technical findings are properly supported

  • Conclusions are balanced and defensible

  • Reports meet court and expert witness standards

Our reports assist legal teams in properly understanding, challenging, or relying upon forensic evidence within the wider context of the case.
